Hermitage

Climate Warmer than Côte-Rôtie. Granite hill above Tain l'Hermitage. More sun accumulation.

Style Single-varietal. Old large oak. High extraction. One of France's most age-worthy reds.

Saint-Joseph

Climate Broad appellation along Northern Rhône. Granite and schist. More varied than Hermitage.

Style Lighter style than Hermitage. Some whole cluster. Moderate oak. Earlier drinking.

Crozes-Hermitage

Climate Surrounds Hermitage hill. Flat terrace soils — less concentrated than the hill itself.

Style Entry-level Northern Rhône Syrah. Moderate oak. Good value tier.

Cornas

Climate Warmest Northern Rhône appellation. Granite amphitheater. Very high sun accumulation.

Style 100% Syrah. Rustic. Long maceration traditional. Very firm tannin. Needs significant age.

Australia

Barossa Valley

Climate Warm continental. Old vine Shiraz (pre-phylloxera) benchmark. Warm days, moderate nights.

Style New American and French oak. Full MLF. High alcohol. Rich and generous. Old vine concentration.

USA

Central Coast

Climate Variable. Marine influence on coastal sites; warmer inland. Paso Robles and Santa Barbara.

Style Rhône-influenced producers dominant. Moderate to new oak. Range from elegant to extracted.

Washington State

Climate Cool continental Columbia Valley. Basalt soils. Cold winters, warm dry summers.

Style Whole cluster possible. French oak preferred. Firm tannin and good acid retention.
